A Monroe man was shot and killed early Sunday during an attempted robbery.

Monroe police responded to a reported shooting in the 1600 block of South Seventh Street about 5 a.m. Sunday.

Three men in a vehicle had been approached by three armed men who demanded valuables from them. When they refused, Marcus Montgomery, 29, one of the people in the vehicle, was shot in the abdomen. He was transported to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died.

The three suspects were described as black males of medium build, ranging in height from 5-foot7 to 5-foot-9.

According to Assistant Monroe Police Chief Don Bartley, 30 minutes later an individual sitting on his porch in the 2700 block of Gordon Avenue was approached by three men who took his car keys and drove off in his blue 2001 Cadillac CTS, license plate WAN 762.

The car owner chased after the suspects and was shot and grazed in the leg.

Bartley said it is not certain the two events are related. He encouraged anyone with information about the suspects or the location of the car to call the Monroe Police Department at 329-2600 or Crime Stoppers at 388-2274 (CASH).
