The U.S. Department of Justice has requested that a special master be appointed in relation to the Monroe City School Board's ongoing consent decree.

A special master can have a broad spectrum of duties, which can include ensuring that parties are following judicial orders.

The Department of Justice filed a sealed motion Dec. 8. In a conference call with counsel for all parties Tuesday, attorneys for the board and Superintendent Brent Vidrine were responses to the request must be filed by Jan. 12.

A Department of Justice attorney said the district provided all the completed teacher's surveys that were requested and had follow-up questions answered by Vidrine and his attorney.

U.S. District Judge Robbie James instructed the Department of Justice attorneys to provide a list of the school district's remaining current deficiencies to the board, Vidrine and the court by Dec. 23. The list should identify specific concerns so the district can take swift action.

Any responses to the list should be filed no later than Jan. 12.

James set a status conference call for 2 p.m. Jan. 13.
